We’re in orbit. We conquered Jupiter,” lead mission scientist Scott Bolton, with the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, told reporters on Tuesday. “Now the fun begins.”Juno will spend the next three months getting into position to begin studying what lies beneath Jupiter’s thick clouds and mapping the planet’s gargantuan magnetic fields.Flying in egg-shaped orbits, each one lasting 14 days, Juno also will look for evidence that Jupiter has a dense inner core and measure how much water is in the atmosphere, a key yardstick for figuring out how far away from the sun the gas giant formed.Jupiter’s origins, in turn, affected the development and position of the rest of the planets, including Earth and its fortuitous location conducive to the evolution of life.“The question I’ve had my whole life that I’m hoping we get an answer to is ‘How’d we get here?’ That’s really pretty fundamental to me,” Bolton said.Jupiter orbits five times farther from the sun than Earth, but it may have started out elsewhere and migrated, jostling its smaller sibling planets as it moved. Jupiter’s immense gravity also diverts many asteroids and comets from potentially catastrophic collisions with Earth and the rest of the inner solar system.Launched from Florida nearly five years ago, Juno needed to be precisely positioned, ignite its main engine at exactly the right time and keep it firing for 35 minutes to become only the second spacecraft to orbit Jupiter. If anything had gone even slightly awry, Juno would have sailed helplessly past Jupiter, unable to complete a $1 billion mission. The risky maneuver began as planned at 11:18 p.m. EDT/0318 Tuesday GMT as Juno soared through the vacuum of space at more than 160,000 mph (257,500 kph).NASA expects Juno to be in position for its first close-up images of Jupiter on Aug. 27, the same day its science instruments are turned on for a test run.Only one other spacecraft, Galileo, has ever circled Jupiter, which is itself orbited by 67 known moons. Bolton said Juno is likely to discover even more.Seven other U.S. space probes have sailed past the gas giant on brief reconnaissance missions before heading elsewhere in the solar system. The risks to the spacecraft are not over. Juno will fly in highly elliptical orbits that will pass within 3,000 miles (4,800 km) of the tops of Jupiter’s clouds and inside the planet’s powerful radiation belts.Juno’s computers and sensitive science instruments are housed in a 400-pound (180-kg) titanium vault for protection. But during its 37 orbits around Jupiter, Juno will be exposed to the equivalent of 100 million dental X-rays, said Bill McAlpine, radiation control manager for the mission. The spacecraft, built by Lockheed Martin, is expected to last for 20 months. On its final orbit, Juno will dive into Jupiter’s atmosphere, where it will be crushed and vaporized.Like Galileo, which circled Jupiter for eight years before crashing into the planet in 2003, Juno’s demise is designed to prevent any hitchhiking microbes from Earth from inadvertently contaminating Jupiter’s ocean-bearing moon Europa, a target of future study for extraterrestrial life.(By Irene Klotz; Editing by Kim Coghill and Andrew Heavens) 3 min read How Human Behavior is Hurting Animals and What We Can Do to Protect Them North Carolina superintendent says new app can help reduce violence in schools Summer Beauty Survival Must-Haves Saint Laurent dazzles with men’s collection on Malibu beach US Navy: Russian destroyer almost collided with cruiser in the Philippine Sea Summer is here and there are some great looks this season for women of all shapes and sizes. The video on the social media platform at some points was operating on a delay of almost 30 seconds.”The quality is better than my HD TV, but it being delayed stinks,” wrote Twitter user DCBlueStar (@DCBlueStar). “I’ll stick to the TV, I reckon.”Available on Twitter’s platform worldwide, Thursday’s game was the first of 10 that the microblogging site plans to stream as it seeks to make itself a force in mobile video with live events.Twitter has struggled with user growth and advertising competition, and livestreaming the games gives the social network a new avenue to attract users as it tries to catch up with rivals like Facebook Inc.Media experts have said the NFL deal helps cement Twitter’s position as a venue for live video.Twitter’s arrangement with the NFL comes as sports fans increasingly rely on the internet to watch video at the expense of traditional cable and satellite connections. It seems that there is no consensus about how much longer we’ll be stuck with winter. Punxsutawney Phil did see his shadow — ostensibly predicting six more weeks of winter — while the less alliteratively named Staten Island Chuck did not. Now, predictions are a tricky business, but it seems that we’re going to continue to deal with precipitation and chilly temperatures at least for the time being, and that means travel delays, especially for flights.Google might be a little bit more adept at attempting to see the future than a groundhog. The search giant said that an update of its Google Flights app is making it possible to predict whether your flight will be delayed, even before the airlines figure it out.Related: Emotional Support Peacock Rejected to Fly by United Airlines”Flights already shows delays, and now we’re sharing reasons for those delays and delay predictions too,” the company explained in a blog post. “Using historic flight status data, our machine learning algorithms can predict some delays even when this information isn’t available from airlines yet — and delays are only flagged when we’re at least 80 percent confident in the prediction.”The company doesn’t suggest relying solely on Google Flights to decide whether you should go to the airport or not as things can always change, but at least you’ll have a sense of how long you’re going to potentially be stuck in the terminal. Apparently even better than the airports can. first_img Entrepreneur Staff 2 min read WATCH: Comedian John Oliver Takes On FCC in Witty Net Neutrality Rant Register Now » Net Neutrality The FCC’s discriminatory net neutrality proposal is hardly a joke, but as HBO’s John Oliver demonstrates, it can best be explained through comedy.Oliver, the host of HBO’s comedy show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, explained net neutrality in a 13-minute segment on Sunday, with some very entertaining results. Breaking down the issue with some pointed punchlines about the deep boredom the hearings on the FCC’s recommended new rules have inspired (“I would rather listen to a pair of Dockers tell me about the weird dream they had”), Oliver said net neutrality is “why the internet is a weirdly level playing field, and startups can supplant established brands…The internet in its current form is not broken, and the FCC is currently taking steps to fix that.” Related: The Latest FCC Net Neutrality Rules Should Be Opposed Of the proposed “Internet fast lanes” that the cable companies would be able to pay for, Oliver said: “if we let cable companies offer two speeds of service, they won’t be Usain Bolt and Usain Bolt on a motorbike. They’ll be Usain Bolt and Usain bolted to an anchor.”Calling for internet commenters to use their persistence for a good cause with a “seize your moment my lovely trolls,” Oliver ultimately directed those with displeasure to share with the FCC to http://www.fcc.gov/comments, which promptly crashed the site. Check it out.Related: Almost Every Major Tech Company in America Blasts the FCC’s Net Neutrality Proposal Free Webinar | July 31: Secrets to Running a Successful Family Business Staff Writer. first_img Register Now » It’s Bring Your Dog to Work Day! What You Need to Know to Make Your Office Pet-Friendly. Free Webinar | July 31: Secrets to Running a Successful Family Business 7 min read bring your dog Ever hear of ‘paw-ternity’ leave, when employees get new pets? Something new to consider for your pet-friendly office. Learn how to successfully navigate family business dynamics and build businesses that excel. Add to Queue June 22, 2018 Today, June 22, is Bring Your Dog to Work Day! So, tell Fido what a good boy he is as he chills under your desk. And celebrate the day, because bringing your furry friend to work is certainly a nice perk.Related: Bring Your Dog to Work Day Is Every Day for These 8 CompaniesHow important are pets in the workplace to pet parents overall? New research from Wellness Natural Pet Food answers that question, proving the power of a pet-friendly workplace when it comes to attracting and retaining employees.Specifically, of 1,100 pet owners, ages 18 to 65, whom a research company surveyed nationally, 51 percent said they would consider a career change for a pet-friendly workplace. And 37 percent of the pet parents polled said they would sacrifice benefits like vacation time or work from home days in order to enjoy a pet-friendly workplace.Of course, not everyone has to make sacrifices to bring their pooches to work. Some workplaces, like Harpoon Brewery and Zoosk, allow pets in the office year-round, saying that that move gives their employees more flexibility, improves their mood (and productivity!) in the office, and allows employees to bring their full attention to work. And the frosting on the cake, or the extra meat on the dog bone, is that those employees can also give their pets a level of companionship that the animals might otherwise not have during the workday. What’s more, allowing pets in the office has human health benefits, too! Studies have found that pets can help lower our blood pressure, lessen anxiety and increase physical activity. So, if you’re thinking about making the leap to introduce pets into your workplace, here are some considerations for building out a pet-friendly office policy to ensure successful workdays for pet and pet parent alike: Get the all-clear.First and foremost, ensure that your landlord or building management allows pets in the office. You should also check with your team to make sure everyone is on board, to avoid any surprises or upsets. Some people may have allergies, phobias or other concerns about dogs in the office, and you’ll want to give them an opportunity to weigh in.Survey your office layout.Whether your workplace consists of cubicles, private offices or an open layout, a plan for where pets will spend their time is essential. Ask yourself: Is there enough space near employees’ desks to accommodate a bed or crate? Do we have enough space to designate a special “pet area” sectioned off by doors, gates or other boundaries? And: Are there readily accessible outdoor areas for bathroom breaks? Should we require owners to “pick up” after their animals? The goal is to make pets and their owners as well as non-owners as comfortable as possible, and defining special boundaries can help accomplish this. You may also want to consider designating a pet-free section of the office for employees with allergies or a dislike or fear of dogs. Glassdoor, for instance, has found this kind of policy very helpful in its office.Begin drafting your pet policy. Now, you’re ready to begin drafting your pet-friendly office policy. Putting pen to paper helps formalize the policy and sets clear expectations for existing employees. Again, make sure to get input from both employees who will be bringing their dogs in and those who won’t, to ensure the policy is fair and balanced.Your policy should outline what types of pets are allowed in the office. It should detail how pets will be “interviewed” for acceptance (healthy and up to date on vaccinations, trained to some extent — certainly housebroken — and able to get along with other pets and people). Further, the policy should include how behavioral issues, damage to company equipment or non-compliance with the policy will be handled. Will pets be allowed in conference rooms and meetings? Are (annoying) squeaky toys a no-go? What supplies will your company provide and what should employees bring on their own? All things that should be included in your policy! You may also consider incorporating additional pet-centric benefits like “paw-ternity” leave — Massachusetts-based Zogics, for example, gives new pet parents an extra week of paid time off to spend with their new family member!Related: Who Let the Dogs Out? Hooray! Friday Is ‘National Bring Your Dog to Work Day.’Prep your office.Just as we pet-proof our homes, your office will require similar planning to ensure safety for pets and pet parents alike. Loose wires should be secured, equipment and cleaning supplies should be placed out of any paw’s reach; and you may want to invest in garbage bins with lids to avoid trash spills. If you’ll be designating certain spaces as off-limits, make sure that they are properly secured or blocked off.Pets in the office will also require some new office supplies, as well. If a pet has an accident (because even the best house-trained pups can get over-excited in a new space) carpet cleaner is essential, and baby gates or pens may also be necessary depending upon your office layout and policy. If you plan to designate an area specifically for pets, the way BissellHomecare does with its “pet spot,” it may be helpful to outfit that space with items such as water bowls, beds, treats, toys, poop bags and spare leashes. Try stocking the office with grain-free, natural treats that most dogs do well on; that way, employees can treat their dog-office mates without the guilt less healthy or fattening snacks might prompt. Also, don’t forget some lint rollers for the fur that will soon be flying around!Plan for your furry new ’employee’s’ first day.All employees have a transition period when starting a new job, and a pet is no exception! Before implementing your pet policy, give your employees plenty of time to review the rules so everyone is on the same page. Keep in mind that transitions take time. Designating a portion of the morning, perhaps on a Friday, to welcoming pets to your workplace can help with this transition and give everyone the time needed to successfully integrate without interruption.Pets should be introduced to their new space and one other slowly, and if possible, in an outdoor area because some animals may become stressed or agitated meeting in an enclosed space. If you don’t have green space around your office, a patio space similar to that of pet-friendly O.H.S.O. Brewery is a great substitute! Owners should keep an eye out for signs of stress in their pet and plan to spend the rest of the day working from home if their dog does not take to the office.Related: It’s ‘Take Your Dog to Work Day’: Have You Thanked Fido Today?Whether you’re looking to build a business from the ground up, or seeking to grow your startup, having a pet along for the journey can not only help attract new employees, but also positively impact the work environment for those already on the team.Plenty of companies across the country have happily integrated pets into the workplace, proving that a pet-friendly workplace is one benefit worth serious consideration. You may be surprised at how dogs’ presence can translate into success for your business and a harmonious office environment for your employees. first_img Senior Editor for Green Entrepreneur Each week hear inspiring stories of business owners who have taken the cannabis challenge and are now navigating the exciting but unpredictable Green Rush. Legal Marijuana Add to Queue Many new office holders support legal marijuana but few made it their highest priority. Peter Page Image credit: adamkaz | Getty Images –shares Entrepreneur Staffcenter_img Listen Now 6 min read November 16, 2018 After more than a week of sifting through the results it is increasingly clear that what initially appeared to be a good election for expanding legal marijuana access in the US was actually a very, very good election. Voters in Utah and Missouri approved medical marijuana programs in midterm voting, while voters in Michigan (which already has a large and growing medical marijuana program) gave landslide approval to full legalization. But if there is one lesson cannabis advocates ought to have learned by now, electing pro-marijuana candidates is just a step in the right direction. While it’s likely many more states will be legalizing marijuana, don’t be surprised if it takes until the 2020 elections. Why will it take so long? Consider New Jersey. The Garden State has long had a medical marijuana program, but former Gov. Chris Christie kept it as small as he legally could. In 2017 (for whatever reason, New Jersey and Virginia elect their governors in odd numbered years) Christie was replaced by Phil Murphy, a Democrat who made marijuana legalization a big part of his campaign.Despite the lack of any committed opposition to legalization and with Democratic majorities in both houses of the Legislature, marijuana is still illegal in New Jersey. Between the routine complexity of running a large state government, staffing a new administration, infighting between Democrats and, currently, a Legislature investigating a Murphy campaign aide for a state job despite sexual misconduct allegations, a legalization bill that has been pending since before Murphy’s inauguration is still pending. The midterm elections put cannabis-friendly politicians into important jobs in many states, but nobody ran exclusively on a platform of legal weed. Here is a look at the prospects and the priorities ranked higher than legalization in three big states, with a combined population of 38.3 million people, that seem poised to legalize.Related: New Jersey Legalization Bill Reportedly Sets Nation’s Lowest Tax on Legal MarijuanaNew YorkRepublicans have dominated the state Senate almost without interruption since the end of World War II but when the votes were counted last week, Democrats — many of whom ran on platforms that included legalizing marijuana — won a resounding majority.Democrats already held a majority in the Assembly and Gov. Andrew Cuomo, also a Democrat, has signaled support for full legalization, both as a new source of revenue and because of gross racial disparities in marijuana arrests. Cuomo embraced a study by his Department of Health calling for legalizing recreational marijuana. The department estimated the current illegal marijuana market in the Empire State at $3.5 billion annually. On top of that, a report by the New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer estimated legalization would be a tax windfall of $336 million for the city and $435.7 million for the state.Despite all that, the Empire State has a host of urgent problems from rusted and unreliable bridges, roads and mass transit to criminal justice reform and, just in the past few days, an uproar over lavish incentives for Amazon to move into New York City. The official list of priorities published by the New York Democratic Party doesn’t mention marijuana legalization. You can smoke a joint on the streets of New York without being arrested but you can’t yet roll that joint with legal pot.Related: Why the Word ‘Recreational’ Should Be RetiredIllinoisFor at least the past two years Democrats have been pushing for marijuana legalization in Illinois, a state with severe budget problems. Their chances of success, and of the state reaping an estimated $300 million up to $750 million in new revenues , improved significantly with the election JB Pritzker, a pro-pot Democrat.Pritzker’s election means Democrats now control both house of the Legislature and the governor’s mansion. A study by the Illinois Economic Policy Institute estimated a legal marijuana market would total $1.6 billion in annual sales, generating 23,600 new jobs and a revenues for public schools and other pressing needs.Illinois can use the money and the jobs but that is no guarantee of fast action. The biggest obstacle the Chicago Tribune sees to legalization is a protracted struggle over how to divvy up new revenues between the state and local governments. Illinois has already decriminilized marijuana, which relieves a major social justice motive for legalization, negotiations over tax rate and revenue split are probably going to be drawn out, and Republican lawmakers are not onboard.“I will never support legalization,” House Republican leader Jim Durkin said to the Chicago Tribune. “I don’t like how quickly we are moving. Illinois should not be part of this lab experiment. I see no societal value.”Related: Latest Gallup Poll Finds a Big Majority of Americans Support Legal MarijuanaMinnesotaMarijuana played a big, albeit roundabout, role in getting Democrat Keith Ellison elected the new Minnesota attorney general. Ellison, who was a high-profile member of Congress, was dogged by allegations of sexual abuse. A poll before the election showed Ellison with a small lead over his Republican opponent. The same poll found, Noah Johnson, the Grassroots-Legal Marijuana Now party nominee for Minnesota attorney general, with 5 percent support. In a remarkably candid interview, Johnson stopped just short of promising to drop out of the race and endorse Ellison if Ellison explicitly embraced marijuana legalization.“It’s possible that Ellison could sap some of my support just by coming out on this common sense issue,” Johnson said. “If he came out supporting legalized recreational marijuana, not just saying, ‘Well, it’s probably better than opioids,’ or ‘We’d think about it’ or ‘We should definitely have stronger medical,’ but if he switched to legalize recreational marijuana, my campaign would have to consider.”Ellison apparently got the message. He endorsed legalized marijuana, Johnson endorsed him (though only after it was too late to remove his name from the ballot) and Ellison won, as did the Democrat running for governor, Tim Walz. Cannabis advocates were cheered but they have lots of work left. Legal marijuana was not mentioned on a list of “high-profile Democratic proposals” that includes increasing the gas tax for roads, a big spending boost for schools and a public health insurance option. The momentum favoring marijuana legalization is formidable — the public is clamoring for both an end to mass incarceration driven by pot arrests and alternatives to opioids. State and local governments want economic development and new tax revenues, while entrepreneurs (including former politicians who had entire careers opposing marijuana) are eager for new opportunities. Legalization is probably inevitable but only if advocates keep pressuring the politicians they have helped elect. Milano ultimately got the help she needed and tweeted that her “horses are finally safe. My children are safe. My home is in jeopardy but … everything with a heartbeat is safe. By Ryan Whitwam on July 22, 2019 at 1:38 pm Google has shown off some wildly futuristic technologies at its annual I/O gathering, but most of them have faded into obscurity without ever appearing in a consumer product. The Project Soli gesture control system has been pie-in-the-sky since its debut in 2015, but a report several months back confirmed Google was still working on the tech. Now, a new leak suggests it might become an integral part of the next Pixel phone, PCMag reports.Soli originated with the Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group, which Google kept when it sold off the rest of Motorola to Lenovo a couple of years back. ATAP is responsible for interesting but ultimately useless technologies like Jacquard touch fabric, Ara modular phones, and Tango 3D computer vision. Google tried to launch all three products, but they failed either in development or shortly after launch. Soli uses a small radar chip to detect hand movements with much greater accuracy than existing systems based on cameras and motion sensors. In the original I/O demos, Google showed how Soli could enable buttons taps, scrolling, and volume controls without touching the phone. For example, imagine turning a virtual knob to change the volume on your phone or tapping your thumb and forefinger to tap the screen. In late 2018, the FCC permitted Google to operate the Soli in testing at higher than usual frequencies, even on aircraft. That told us Google was still working on Soli, and now there are some hints that the Pixel 4 will include a Soli chip. A leak of Pixel 4 screen protectors includes a large pill-shaped sensor window on the top right side (in that oversized bezel). Several sources suggest that’s for Soli. If the Pixel 4 does include Soli, that could justify the larger bezel at a time when most device makers are striving to shrink the bezel. That could also explain why Google only showed us the back of the Pixel 4 in its unexpected teaser on Twitter a few weeks back — it’s saving Soli for the big reveal. Google’s hardware announcements have happened in October for the last three years. So, that’s probably when we’ll find out if the Pixel 4 will indeed feature the consumer debut of Soli. Even if Soli does come to the Pixel 4, no one knows how well it will work. It would hardly be the first ATAP technology that didn’t live up to expectations. Now read:Pixel 4 XL Leak Confirms Big Bezel, No NotchGoogle Settles Pixel Class Action Lawsuit, Will Pay Owners Up to $500Google Says Pixel 3 Sales Are Worse Than Pixel 2 2 Comments Huge Scandals That Rocked The History Channel Maisie Williams’ Transformation is Turning Heads Pixel 4 Might Support ‘Soli’ Touchless Gestureslast_img read more

This trailblazing book is written specifically for consumer-facing businesses and offers practical recommendations for harnessing the value of digitally connecting with customers wherever they are to drive loyalty and sales.Mason taps into 30+ years of retail industry experience to deliver his learnings and insights in this new book, which outlines the “digital imperative” retail brands face to connect with customers today through relevant and timely engagement, as well as the value of customer connections and the need for omnichannel approaches to loyalty. Previously the CMO and deputy CEO of Tesco, the largest multinational grocery and general merchandise retailer in the UK, Mason led the launch of Tesco Clubcard in 1995, creating the world’s first major grocery loyalty program. As the current CEO of Eagle Eye, he has also helped Loblaw launch its PC Optimum program, Canada’s largest loyalty scheme, combining the Shopper’s Optimum and PC Plus programs into a single cross-banner initiative.Marketing Technology News: PepsiCo Foodservice Unveils New Digital Lab to Help Restaurants Thrive In The Evolving Digital MarketplaceDigital as an Opportunity, Not a Threat Headlines often blame the growth of online shopping as the cause of Main Street’s demise. In Omnichannel Retail, however, Mason argues that this digital trend actually presents an opportunity for brick-and-mortar retailers, not a threat, and that digitalization can foster more meaningful customer connections, boost loyalty and increase sales, both online and offline.Retailers still need to deliver a differentiated customer experience, and that means connecting and engaging customers in the most relevant and timely ways possible – often through the digital channel. With 90% of shopping transactions still completed in a physical store, the physical retail space is far from dead. But traditional sales outlets need reimagining to re-establish their place in a digital world, as well as their ability to both compete with and enhance online shopping experiences. Marketing Technology News: Xignite CEO to Give Keynote on Migrating Market Data to the Cloud at The North American Financial Information Summit – NAFIS 2019Retail needs a “mobile makeover”Omnichannel Retail shows retailers how to give their stores a ‘mobile makeover’ to maintain their relevance and connection to today’s customers in order to drive growth. Rather than discouraging digital interactions in-store for fear of driving customers to online rivals, retailers need to digitally augment their physical advantages – of expert customer service, sensory selection, “try before you buy,” and instant gratification and fulfilment. Delivering personalized experiences that resonate with consumers and challenge digitally enabled and data-driven competitors like Amazon, Alibaba and Jet.com mandates that retailers transform their businesses – today.Mason co-authored Omnichannel Retail with retail technology expert and bestselling Amazon co-author Miya Knights. Knights has spent 20 years as an enterprise technology journalist, analyst and research director, studying the demands and challenges faced by retailers and the technology-based best practices that can best support their needs. The two experts explore how the use of digital technologies to transform the omnichannel shopping experience can help shine a light into shops, restaurants or showrooms that are like a digital “black hole,” devoid of connectivity and from which little meaningful interaction takes place.Marketing Technology News: Verasity Announces Integration with YouTube How Digital Can Save Brick-And-Mortar Retail with Customer Experience Objectives PRNewswireMay 22, 2019, 7:37 pmMay 22, 2019 last_img read more
