Big baseball/softball weekend for Wellington’s Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken young

The Wellington All Stars will play this weekend in Junction City.by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — It was a busy weekend for the young Wellington baseball and softball players as Babe Ruth Tournaments were being held across the state. Wellington hosted  a couple of Babe Ruth Tournament this weekend including the 10-year-old Cal Ripken Baseball Tournament at Worden Park and the 13-to-15-year-old district tournament at Sellers: Here is an update of tournaments that were played and special awards presented.BABE RUTH BASEBALL: 16-18 years olds: Wellington did not have a district tournament, and automatically qualified for state in Hesston, played over the weekend. Liberal defeated Wellington 12-10 in game one in a round-robin tournament Saturday. Wellington then came back to win the second game against Abilene 6-5.No information was available for Sunday’s game against Moundridge.Players winning the MVP and WOW’s include:Vs. Liberal – MVP: Chantz Daugherty, WOW: Chevy Nuss.Vs. Clearwater – MVP: Adam Hilt, WOW: Tray Cary.13-15-year-olds  Wellington rolled through the District 3 Kansas Babe Ruth Tournament at Sellers Park this weekend. The locals will now head to Junction City this Friday.Wellington will be in a round robin “American” division that includes Chapman, Parsons and host Junction City. The National Division will include: Liberal, Chanute, Cottonwood Valley and Galena. Wellington opens against Chapman on Friday, July 22 at 2:30 p.m. and plays Junction City and Parsons Saturday.If Wellington is in the top two of the four in the division then it will play in a single elimination championship bracket at 10 a.m. Monday.In the District 3 tournament this weekend, Wellington was dominant against Rose Hill, Clearwater and Derby.The locals defeated Derby 21-11, Clearwater 12-2, and Clearwater again 24-0 in the championship.Players winning the MVP and WOW’s include:Vs. Derby – MVP: Jack Nuss, WOW: Matthew Rinehart.Vs. Clearwater – MVP: Matthew Rinehart, WOW: Jack Nuss.Vs. Clearwater (Championship) – MVP: Julian Jimenez, WOW: Brayden Higginbotham.14 year olds: Wellington did not have a district tournament and played in Pittsburg this weekend. The locals appear to be in the state finals that was being played today.Wellington lost to Pittsburg 14-4, defeated Cottonwood Valley 16-14, and beat Frontenac 15-7 on Sunday.Players winning the MVP and WOW awards were:Vs. Pittsburg – MVP: John Long, WOW: Zane Cornejo.Vs. Cottonwood Valley – MVP: Eric Goodrum, WOW: Silas Popplewell.Vs. Arma: Madison Baker.12-under: Wellington went 1-4 over the weekend in Conway Springs.The locals lost to Winfield 20-5, lost to CVL all-stars 22-0, lost to Coffeyville 11-6, lost to Arma 16-0, and defeated SPIAA 11-10.The winner of the “SHE” awards were:Vs. This was something that was not mentioned, but I believe it is something that Wellington can be proud of. We are not only raising kiddos who are good ball players, but more importantly they are good citizens. I also think that it is also a tribute to the leadership of the coaching staff.
