Wellington American Legion Post 90 baseball team sets sights on zone tournament in Burlington then state tournament in Wathena

first_imgThe 2014 Wellington American Legion team.by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington American Legion Post 90 team is Wheat Festival Tournament champions, but the team’s eyes are on bigger prizes.The American Legion Post 90 team will be heading to the regional zone tournament in Burlington, Kans. If the team wins there, it will then be off to the Class AA Kansas State Tournament in Wathena – which is at the tip of northeast Kansas near St. Joseph, Mo.This team is pretty good, made up of players, who will represent Wellington in various sports for the coming school year.The team consists of:Derek Driskell, Cameron Bartelson, Zach Fredricks, Colin Reichenberger, Skyler Struble, Jace Lowe, Dylan Jones, Adam Condit, Wesley Gilmore, Austin Dunn, Connor Phelps, Trevor Nance, Jared Shields and Jaden Hines.The team is currently 15-8 and recent winners of the Wheat Festival tournament.Post 90 defeated the 15-year-old Wellington Babe Ruth All Stars 16-2, Ark City 8-7, and Emporia 8-6 in the championship game on Sunday.Wellington will travel to Wathena July 30 to Aug. 3.
